Grundsicherungsgeld

Bürgergeld and assets — how much may you have?

Assets remain disregarded up to an allowance for each person in the benefit household; it is graded by age (§ 12 paragraph 2 SGB II). The amounts are on the Grundsicherungsgeld page.

Not counted are appropriate household effects, an appropriate motor vehicle for each person fit for work, and assets intended for retirement provision.

This scale has applied since 1 July 2026. For Bewilligungszeiträume (approval periods) that began earlier, the previous version still applies until they end (§ 65a paragraph 1 SGB II).

Fill in Grundsicherungsgeld with the annex VM

What stands on the annex VM

The annex VM concerns the assets of the whole household and is filled in once. It asks about cash, accounts, savings, securities, building society contracts, retirement provision, insurance policies with a surrender value, real property and vehicles — every line with the detail of whom the item belongs to.

Owner-occupied property

During the grace period for housing an owner-occupied house or an owner-occupied flat stays out of consideration. That is how it stands in § 12 paragraph 1 sentence 3 SGB II, which refers to § 22 paragraph 1 sentence 2 SGB II. After that it comes down to appropriateness.

Why the bank statements are required

The assets are traced from the bank statements of the last three months — from every account of every person in the household, without gaps. Among the outgoings individual entries may be blacked out, among the incomings they may not.

What the Jobcenter decides

Whether a vehicle or a home is appropriate and whether an item counts as realisable is decided by the Jobcenter in the individual case. The official form collects the details; the assessment stands neither in it nor here.

The allowance applies per person

It is not the household as a whole that is counted, but each person in the benefit household on their own — with the allowance that belongs to their age. In a household with several people the allowances therefore add up. The annex VM asks at every line whom the item belongs to; the attribution hangs on precisely that.

Gifts and transfers

The annex VM also asks about gifts of recent years. What is meant is whether someone from the household has given away or transferred something — a property, a vehicle, money. Larger transfers are meant, not the usual presents. Anyone giving such a detail names the object briefly and its value at the time. Whether anything follows from it the Jobcenter examines; the annex only asks about the event.

What that costs

One price for the whole set — no matter how many people live in your household and how many sheets that produces. The sample calculations are on the page about Grundsicherungsgeld.
